Castle Upgrade Order — The Optimal Progression Path
Your castle level is the single number that governs your progression in War and Order. It determines which buildings you can construct, which troops you can train, which research nodes you can unlock, and — critically — which alliances will accept you as a member. Getting your castle level up efficiently is the foundation of the entire game.
But "upgrade your castle" is not as simple as it sounds. War and Order uses a prerequisite system: each castle upgrade requires certain supporting buildings to be at specific levels before you can proceed. Understanding this system — and planning around it — is the difference between smooth progression and constantly running into upgrade walls.
How the Prerequisite System Works
Every castle level upgrade has a list of required building levels. Before you can upgrade your castle to, say, level 12, you must have your barracks, wall, watchtower, and other required buildings at certain levels.
This means your upgrade path is never just "castle → castle → castle." It is a weaving sequence of castle upgrades interleaved with the building upgrades those castle levels require. Players who understand this plan ahead. Players who do not keep hitting walls and waiting for resources.

The Core Principle: Castle as Fast as Possible
The #1 objective in the early and mid-game is to get your castle level up as quickly as possible. Every other optimization — troop composition, research focus, resource management — benefits from having a higher castle level as its foundation.
This means:
- Prioritize castle upgrades over optional building upgrades. Upgrade supporting buildings to the required level for the next castle upgrade, then castle, then repeat.
- Use speed-ups on castle upgrades. Speed-ups have limited value sitting in your inventory. Castle upgrades are the highest-return place to spend them.
- Don't get distracted by upgrades that feel nice but are not required. The buildings tool will show you what is required vs. what is optional at each castle level.
Building Priority Tiers
Not all buildings are created equal. Some buildings unlock new capabilities or are prerequisites for important systems — these must come up quickly. Others provide incremental improvements but are not blocking anything.
Tier 1 — Required for progression:
- Castle (always upgrading toward the next level)
- Barracks (required for troop tier unlocks)
- Wall (required for castle upgrades, also provides defense)
- Any building listed as a prerequisite for your next castle level upgrade
Tier 2 — High value, upgrade when required:
- Hospital (capacity needs to keep pace with army size — exceeded capacity means permanent troop death)
- Watchtower (improves scouting information about attackers)
- Rally Post (required for certain multiplayer activities)
- Production buildings (farms, sawmills, quarries, mines — keep these within 2-3 levels of your castle)
Tier 3 — Upgrade when convenient:
- Decorative or secondary buildings that provide minor bonuses but are not prerequisites for anything near your current castle level

Hospital: The One Building New Players Under-Level
The hospital is consistently under-leveled by new players, and the consequences are serious. When your troops are wounded in battle, they go to the hospital. As long as they are in the hospital (and within its capacity), they can be healed for free — no resources spent, no time lost.
But if your hospital is at capacity and you take casualties above that capacity, the overflow troops die permanently. They are gone. Resources and time spent training them are gone.
As your army grows, your hospital capacity must grow with it. Check your hospital capacity relative to your army size regularly. If they are getting close, prioritize hospital upgrades even if they are not technically required for your next castle level.
Speed-Up Strategy for Buildings
Speed-ups are most efficiently spent on long-duration upgrades, not short ones. Using a 1-hour speed-up on a 10-minute construction is wasteful. Using it on a 12-hour upgrade is efficient.
In the early and mid-game, building upgrades grow longer with each level. By the time you are upgrading castle-level buildings at the higher levels, individual upgrades can take days. That is where your speed-up stockpile matters.
Save larger speed-ups for the upgrades that cost the most time. Use passive time to complete smaller upgrades and speed-ups to push through the hours-long or days-long upgrades that are blocking your next milestone.
Two Construction Queues
Free-to-play players have one construction queue — one building upgrading at a time. Premium players or players who have purchased the second builder can run two construction queues simultaneously.
If you only have one queue, every decision about what to upgrade next has to be sharp. Prioritize hard: castle unlock prerequisites first, hospital parity second, production buildings third, everything else as time permits.
If you have two queues, the second queue is most efficiently used on the long prerequisite chains you need to satisfy before the next castle upgrade — running them in parallel so you never hit a wall where you need three buildings all at level X before proceeding.
Planning Ahead
The best habit for castle progression is planning 2-3 castle levels ahead. Look at what castle level 15 requires (for example), then look at what castle level 14 requires, and identify the longest prerequisite chains. Start working on those chains as early as possible so they are not the thing blocking you when you are finally ready to castle up.
